Acclaimed director Tauquir Ahmed’s fifth full length venture “Haldaa” won the Hiralal Sen Padak at the seventeenth “Amar Bhashar Cholochitro” film festival, organized by Dhaka University Film Society (DUFS), on Saturday, February 17.
Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Professor Mohammad Akhtaruzzaman handed over the award to the director at the closing ceremony of the festival, which was followed by a screening of “Haldaa” at the Teacher Student Centre Auditorium in Dhaka University.
Overjoyed by the award and a houseful audience during the screening of the film, Tauquir said that Hiralal Sen Padak is not just another accolade for him. “The name Hiralal Sen has a mounting importance to me. I am truly delighted and proud to receive the award named after him,” he said during the ceremony.
Alongside “Haldaa,” four other films including Akram Khan’s “Khancha,” Badrul Anam Saud’s “Gohin Baluchor,” Fakhrul Arefeen Khan’s “Bhuban Majhi” and Shameem Akhtar’s “Rina Brown,” vied for the award this year.
Released on the first day of December last year, the story of “Haldaa” was penned by Azad Bulbul whereas the screenplay was written by Tauquir Ahmed himself. The film features the river Haldaa and the life of people living near it. Issues like the struggles of river-dwelling people and land erosion were also in focus in the story.
The three pivotal roles in “Haldaa” were played by actors Zahid Hasan, Mosharraf Karim and Nusrat Imrose Tisha. Mosharraf Karim portrays the character of a fisherman in the film, while Zahid Hasan is seen as the antagonist. Dilara Zaman, Fazlur Rahman Babu, Shahed Ali and Runa Khanare also star in the film.
