Singer Asif Akbar of “O piya” fame raised a serious allegation on his Facebook status this past Monday afternoon. He said that a song composed by Oscar winning music director A R Rahman, titled “Tu Jo Nahi” from an upcoming Bollywood film Ok Jaanu, has been plagiarised from a song of his. Asif Akbar claimed that the Hindi song is a straight forward copy of his song “Tumi nei boley”. It was composed and written by Pritom. Asif recorded the song in 2003. Singer and music director Pritom has also made several posts regarding the issue. The whole incident started with a music video. A music video was posted on YouTube that uses footage from the film Ok Jaanu, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Aditya Roy. The Hindi language song in the video does in fact closely resemble Pritom and Asif’s song released in 2003. But investigation into this revealed the actual story. The song Asif and Pritom are accusing of having been plagiarised from them is not a song from the film Ok Jaanu. The song is not written and composed by A R Rahman either. The song is by a singer named Keshab Goshami, who imitated Asif and Pritom’s song. The song is completely unrelated to the film. The footage from the film was used, apparently, to attract viewers. This happens quite regularly on the internet. Many songs get uploaded with videos from films or elsewhere. Recently, a video of a dance performance by Bangladeshi artists, which was uploaded with an Indian track, caused controversy. It is quite widely practiced tactic to get more hits, likes and shares.Three songs have so far been released from the film Ok Jaanu from Sony Music India. Pritom has since acknowledged his mistake after his allegation was reported in the media.
