Size does not matter in regard to setting an example, what Khagrachhari municipality has demonstrated with astonishing effects.

Waste bins every few yards apart is what keeps the municipality neat and clean, all the while encouraging dwellers to do the same.

Khagrachhari municipality has installed 170 permanent waste bins and 200 temporary bins through its 13.05 square kilometres of area.

The permanent waste bins are particularly enthralling as these, made of steel, are installed almost at every 25 yards throughout the town.

The municipality's Secretary Khandakar Parveen Akhter told the Dhaka Tribune that this initiative was taken in September of last year.

“We have already installed 170 of these steel bins. 30 more will be installed soon. These have been installed as per the need of the dwellers.”

“The densely populated areas, for example the market and bazar areas, have more of these bins and the temporary ones in number.”

“The initiative was taken by our Mayor Rafiqul Alam in a bid to keep the Khagrachhari municipality town neat and clean,” she said.

The mayor held repeated meetings with town dwellers to raise awareness regarding the use of these waste bins, she added.

“In the beginning, we had some problems in getting the people to use these bins. But now, people themselves use them from their regard.”

Four waste management vehicles clean these waste cans regularly early in the morning, the official said. “We try to keep our municipality as clean as possible for town dwellers and visitors.”

This initiative of a town can set an example for the Government of Bangladesh in terms of waste management in the capital and elsewhere.
