The new eight-storey mathematics building at Dhaka University, which was privately funded by the AF Mujibur Rahman Foundation – a charitable trust which focuses on providing financial support for higher education in the country – is a welcome addition to our scientific infrastructure.
With the importance and value of knowledge more important than ever in the world, especially in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and maths) subjects, this is exactly the kind of private philanthropy which the country needs.
As the popularity of the Mathematics Olympiad demonstrates, there is a huge amount of talent and interest in developing the skills and resources of young Bangladeshis, which is not being adequately provided for by established institutions.
Increasing global appreciation of the high value of science can be seen in other ways, such its growing cultural profile, with many events at this year’s Hay Dhaka festival given over to popularising the importance of mathematics and science.
Many of our schools, colleges, and universities, especially in the public sector, are held back by the lack of proper infrastructural development.
It is good to see charitable organisations taking a greater interest in improving science education in the country. We must not allow students and researchers to be held back by poor infrastructure and lack of financial support.
We should encourage and welcome more private foundations and individuals in supporting educational institutions at all levels, both public and private. The inspiration and practical support they can provide can make a huge difference to the lives and potential of young people.
