Modernizing how we fish while honouring our roots

A prosperous future for this industry and indeed our nation depends on how wisely we modernize

Update : 06 May 2026, 03:31 PM

We appreciate Bangladesh intensifying its nationwide drive to boost fish production.

This is a move that speaks directly to the heart of our identity as a nation, for fish has never merely been food here but a core part of our culture, livelihood, and heritage.

From rivers and ponds to the dinner table, fish has always been central to who we are as a nation.

With that said, tradition alone cannot sustain the industry, nor should it be an excuse for inefficiency.

Climate change, overfishing, pollution, and shrinking water bodies are all realities we face on a daily basis and have made it clear that modernization of our fishing industry is no longer optional.

If Bangladesh is to preserve its roots while meeting the demands of a growing population, it must embrace innovation in aquaculture, sustainable practices, and scientific management.

To that end, the programs being implemented by the Department of Fisheries that are focusing on modern farming practices, restoration of water bodies, conservation of indigenous species, and strengthening supply chains to sustain the sector’s steady growth are steps in the right direction.

In support however, we need policies that must be forward‑looking, balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability.

The export potential for this industry has always been significant, but should not come at the cost of domestic food security or ecological collapse.

As such, while the government’s drive is welcome, it must be matched with infrastructure, research, and long‑term planning.

A prosperous future for this industry and indeed our nation depends on how wisely we modernize. Done right, modernization can honour tradition, empower communities, and secure both livelihoods and nutrition. Done poorly, it risks eroding the very heritage it seeks to protect.
