A locally developed tool addressing a local problem with direct benefits for farmers, food security, and the economy

Update : 16 Aug 2026, 03:19 PM

The development of a new diagnostic kit for fish diseases by Bangladeshi researchers is an encouraging reminder of what local scientific innovation can achieve.

Such a breakthrough is practical and one that can help farmers detect infections early, reduce losses, and ultimately strengthen a sector that feeds millions.

However, we must look at this as a symbol of something larger: Bangladesh’s potential when science is taken seriously, funded consistently, and treated as a pillar of national development rather than an afterthought.

For too long, scientific research in Bangladesh has operated on limited budgets, fragmented support, and inconsistent policy attention. Yet every time researchers deliver - whether through agricultural innovation, medical devices, climate‑resilient crops, or environmental monitoring - the impact is immediate and tangible.

The fish‑disease diagnostic kit is one such example: A locally developed tool addressing a local problem with direct benefits for farmers, food security, and the economy.

Bangladesh needs far more of this. Science must not be treated as a luxury but as the foundation of resilience, especially for a developing nation such as ours.

As climate impacts intensify, as public health challenges grow, as food systems strain, and as industries demand new skills, we cannot rely on imported solutions alone. We must build our own scientific capacity.

That will not be possible without sustained investment. Research funding must be predictable, not sporadic and young scientists must have career pathways that encourage innovation rather than push them out of the country. Most importantly, scientific achievements must be integrated into national planning, not celebrated briefly and forgotten.

Investing in science is essential for a country seeking stability, competitiveness, and long‑term prosperity. It is time to support researchers, fund innovation, and make science central to national development.
