The contribution of the service sector to Bangladesh's economy continues to grow. In the outgoing FY26, the size of this sector reached Tk32,06,000 crore, up from Tk28,75,000 crore in the previous fiscal year.
This marks a year-on-year increase of Tk331,000 crore, or approximately 11.5%, according to an analysis of the latest data from Bangladesh Bank.
Considered a key pillar of the national economy, the service sector encompasses wholesale and retail trade, transportation and storage, financial services, housing and real estate, information and communication technology (ICT), hotels and restaurants, education, healthcare, and various professional and other services.
Data indicates that the sector has maintained consistent growth over the past few years.
In FY21, the service sector stood at Tk18,11,000 crore, rising to Tk20,27,000 crore in the following fiscal.
It expanded to Tk22,95,000 crore in FY23, Tk25,72,000 crore in FY24, and Tk28,75,000 crore in FY25.
Continuing this trajectory, the sector surpassed the Tk32 lakh crore mark in FY26.
Economists attribute this expansion to changing income levels and domestic demand, along with an increasing reliance on trade, finance, communication, transport, and other services. alongside industry and agriculture, the service sector now holds significantly greater importance in economic activities than before.
However, experts caution that physical expansion alone will not enhance economic resilience.
They emphasize the need to address productivity gaps, investment constraints, technology adoption, and skilled manpower shortages within the service sector.
Enhancing service quality and diversification is also critical for creating high-value employment.
Economists highlight potential growth areas—such as digital services, Business Process Outsourcing (BPO), fintech, logistics, tourism, healthcare, and professional services—that require stronger policy support.
Strengthening a productive service sector amid high inflation, sluggish investment, and global economic uncertainty could play a vital role in sustaining the country's medium- to long-term economic growth.
Meanwhile, preliminary estimates by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) indicate that Bangladesh's Gross Domestic Product (GDP) is set to surpass the $500 billion milestone for the first time in FY26.
