Remaking our tourism sector

To truly revamp the tourism industry, the government must adopt a comprehensive strategy

Without a doubt, tourism is one of the most underutilized economic engines of Bangladesh. Despite our nation’s wealth of natural beauty -- from the world's longest sea beach in Cox’s Bazar to the rich biodiversity of the Sundarbans -- Bangladesh has yet to fully harness the sector’s potential as a driver of sustainable growth.

To this end, the recent influx of tourists in Cox’s Bazar during the Eid holidays underscores the growing enthusiasm for domestic travel. However, recurring safety lapses, poor infrastructure, and a lack of sustainable planning threaten to stifle progress, as these elements always have.

When it comes to our tourism sector, the lack of fundamental amenities continues to plague Bangladesh’s tourist destinations. The near-total booking of hotels in Cox’s Bazar during the holiday rush signifies the growing interest in domestic travel, yet the accompanying infrastructure strains were apparent. Essential services such as hygienic public washrooms, proper waste management, and affordable transport options remain inconsistently managed.

If Bangladesh is to position itself as a serious contender in the South Asian tourism market, upgrading these basic facilities is paramount. Investment in well-maintained roads, modern public transport connections, and accessible information hubs would significantly enhance the experience for both local and international visitors.

Of course, tourism cannot be solely confined to coastal attractions and urban retreats. The Sundarbans -- a natural treasure and a Unesco World Heritage site -- remains an untapped reservoir for sustainable tourism. Carefully planned eco tourism initiatives would not only bring economic dividends but also reinforce conservation efforts. Implementing structured, low-impact tourism would allow both ecological preservation and economic prosperity to co-exist.

To truly revamp the tourism industry, the government must adopt a comprehensive strategy that prioritizes safety, infrastructure enhancement, and sustainable expansion. A well-regulated sector can become a powerful engine for job creation and national revenue.
