With Bangladesh grappling with political unrest before the election, many of its sectors are feeling the effects, perhaps none more adversely so than its tourism sector, grappling with a severe blow to its vitality and potential, with reports saying that up to 90% of advance bookings have been canceled.
The numbers are truly shocking: Tourism industry insiders claimed they had to count losses worth Tk1,500 crore in the last several weeks due to cancellation of advance bookings in hotels, motels, and resorts across tourist hotspots until mid-January.
The tourism sector has always had the potential to be a vital contributor to Bangladesh's economy, but the recurring political disturbances have spooked potential visitors. Unfortunately, the repercussions are felt not only by tour operators and hotel owners, but also by the countless small businesses that thrive on tourism-related activities.
It is not a stretch to say that the very essence of tourism is based on the promise of safety and enjoyment, and when political unrest takes centre stage, it undermines the industry's ability to attract and retain visitors.
Political stability and a thriving tourism sector go hand in hand. Moving forward, for the long term health of our tourism sector, it is imperative that the authorities concerned implement measures to not only safeguard tourists, but bring assurance to domestic and foreign tourists alike that Bangladesh is an attractive tourist destination.
The potential for economic growth, job creation, and cultural exchange through tourism remains immense, and with concerted efforts, we can navigate through the turbulence and showcase the beauty and warmth of Bangladesh.
