RMG deserves support, but not at the cost of export diversity

While supporting RMG is essential, Bangladesh must not remain in the current trap of over-reliance on a single industry

Bangladesh’s RMG sector has been the veritable backbone of its economy for decades, playing an immense part in the continued development of the nation. However, over the past decade, increased competition, especially from Vietnam, India, and certain African nations benefiting from trade incentives, has meant that there is now a need for strategic government support to keep the RMG sector competitive.

However, according to Kiak Sung, founder of the Korean EPZ, the right strategies and reforms could allow Bangladesh to climb to the number one spot in global apparel exports. Given that our nation is already the world's second-largest apparel exporter as a single country, striving for such a goal makes all the sense.

As things stand, for the RMG sector, challenges such as energy shortages, bureaucratic delays, and inefficient port operations inflate costs and erode competitiveness. The government must prioritize reliable power supply, streamline customs procedures, and invest in modernizing logistics infrastructure at key ports.

Furthermore, while the sector has made strides in workplace safety and labour rights since incidents such as the Tazreen Fashion fire and the Rana Plaza disaster, further improvements in wages, worker welfare, and environmental sustainability will enhance Bangladesh’s brand as a responsible sourcing destination -- though the cooperation of foreign buyers on this front is paramount.

Of course, while supporting RMG is essential, Bangladesh must not remain in the current trap of over-reliance on a single industry. The government’s focus should not come at the expense of nurturing other high-potential sectors such as leather goods, pharmaceuticals, ICT, light engineering, and agro-processing. A diversified export basket is crucial for resilience against global demand shocks -- something the pandemic and recent supply chain disruptions have starkly highlighted.

The RMG sector has brought Bangladesh a long way, and while the sector absolutely deserves further support it is time to build an economy where multiple industries can thrive alongside it.
