It is encouraging to see that, with 2024 as the 50th anniversary of UAE-Bangladesh diplomatic relations, the UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan reiterated his commitment to further strengthening and expanding the existing strong bilateral ties.
Strategic collaboration in the realm of labour migration and remittances will remain a vital facet of this relationship. The UAE has long been a significant destination for Bangladeshi expatriate workers, contributing substantially to the nation's remittance inflow.
By working closely, both countries can ensure the welfare and protection of migrant workers, fostering a relationship built on shared responsibility and compassion. Indeed, it has also been encouraging to see the UAE foreign minister mention the need for streamlining visa procedures, and the faster both nations acknowledge this pressing need, the better.
However, there are other avenues that can be explored. We have already seen in previous reports how Bangladeshi agricultural products and knowledge in the sector are of interest to the UAE, and now is the perfect time to leverage this interest.
Culturally, a strengthened partnership can deepen people-to-people ties, promoting understanding and appreciation between the citizens of Bangladesh and the UAE. Educational exchanges, tourism initiatives, and cultural events are also avenues that hold potential, and can create mutual respect and appreciation for the histories and traditions of both nations.
One of Bangladesh's key strategies in its quest to achieve the goal of Smart Bangladesh is strengthening relationships with nations near and far around the world. By having the UAE as a trusted partner, Bangladesh can not only achieve economic prosperity but also build a foundation for lasting friendship and cooperation.
