Giving peace a chance

The lack of action surrounding this issue is nothing if not troubling

Update : 04 Jan 2024, 03:40 PM

When the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Accord was signed in 1997, it was hailed as a historic step toward resolving long-standing issues in the region. It is unfortunate thus to note that, as per the recent annual report by Parbatya Chattagram Jana Samhati Samiti (PCJSS), close to three decades later, the promises that arose from that historic time remain largely unfulfilled.

Despite Bangladesh’s undeniable progress in recent years, it is disheartening that we continue to see injustices regularly in the region, ranging from jail sentences, arrests, disappearances, killings, land grabbing and eviction from homeland, communal attacks, and violence against women.

Ultimately, for the people of the CHT, it is a struggle for recognition of their cultural and land rights. The peace accord was envisioned as a comprehensive solution, addressing issues of regional autonomy, land disputes, and the protection of indigenous rights. Regrettably, the pace of implementation has been agonizingly slow, with many vital aspects of the accord gathering dust.

This non-implementation of clauses - the report stated that only 25 of the 72 clauses in the accord have been implemented - only perpetuates human rights concerns.  It is imperative that we foster an environment where the indigenous communities feel secure and their rights are respected - this is the bare minimum that should be expected after all these years.

The lack of action surrounding this issue is nothing if not troubling, and demands urgent attention. The authorities concerned must rekindle their commitment to the accord, expediting implementation to bring about lasting peace and prosperity to this beautiful region that has been scarred by conflict for far too long.

The indigenous communities that reside in the region are also Bangladeshis, and as such, deserve tangible action and a genuine commitment to justice, autonomy, and the preservation of not only their cultural heritage, but their rights as Bangladeshis.
