Renewing our outlook on energy

Bangladesh needs definitive policies in our gradual transition to renewable sources

Update : 04 Jan 2024, 03:40 PM

Transitioning to renewable sources of energy is one of the best ways that the world can fight two crises at the same time: A relatively cheap way to secure energy, which is obvious, and fighting the effects of climate change. As a nation on the frontlines of that war, it behooves Bangladesh to start transitioning to renewables sooner rather than later.

To that end, a new report from the Centre for Policy Dialogue sheds some light on the key bottlenecks preventing renewable energy from properly taking root in our country. According to the report "Energy Transition for Addressing Energy Crisis in Bangladesh: Perception of Political Parties,” the major political parties in the country have yet to reach a consensus when it comes to renewable energy policies.

While the ruling party has had some progress in its recognition of the importance of green energy sources, it is still far too committed to fossil fuels as exemplified by large-scale projects such as the Rampal coal-fired power plant.

At a time when the world is starting to have a conversation on phasing out the use of fossil fuels, there is very little excuse for Bangladesh to continue relying on sources such as coal -- burning fossil fuels, as we all know, emits fumes that are deadly both for the environment and living beings. Given the continued deterioration of our air, this is yet another front that renewable energy can greatly help us all.

Bangladesh needs definitive policies in our gradual transition to renewable sources, and our political entities must stand united on this front.
