Climate change remains the single biggest existential threat to humanity in the 21st century and there is an urgent need for sustainable energy sources.
For Bangladesh, being more susceptible to the adverse effects of climate change more than most nations on the planet, together with its dire need of clean, reliable, and affordable sources of power, exploring the untapped potential of wind energy remains of paramount importance for Bangladesh
To that end, news that Bangladesh, with assistance from Denmark, intends to embark upon opening its first offshore wind power plant is certainly welcome news, and should be the first of many.
This project, where Danish firms will team up with Summit Power for the 500MW power plant worth $1.3 billion, has already received approval from the government, and now proceed to a more comprehensive feasibility study so that the project can begin.
Bangladesh currently relies heavily on fossil fuels for power generation, and will do so for the near future. However, if we are to truly transition towards cleaner sources of energy and simultaneously be less susceptible to global oil and gas price fluctuations, diversifying the energy mix and increasing the share of wind energy is the way to go.
Moreover, these are the sort of foreign direct investments that should become the norm and be encouraged more; we hope that the authorities concerned do everything possible to not only ensure that this endeavour sees the light of day with as little hassle as possible, but also devise the appropriate policies required to encourage more such FDI initiatives.
To fully tap into the potential of wind energy, Bangladesh must take a pro-active approach, with substantial future investments in infrastructure, regulatory frameworks, and grid integration, and take this first project as just that - a first step. It is high time that we embrace wind energy as a vital part of our energy landscape and seize the opportunities it offers for a brighter and cleaner future.
