The conversation between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal of Ukraine tells us that when it comes to international diplomacy, we remain steadfast in adhering to the principle stated by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman -- that of friendship to all and malice towards none.
Indeed, as the world's nations have been divided with regard to picking sides in the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine, Bangladesh's neutral stance is at this point the best course of action for our nation. Given our own challenges, it would do well for us to not antagonize any nation.
Indeed, with Ukraine looking to take bilateral relationships with Bangladesh to greater heights, there is no reason for us to not take Ukraine up on that offer, and explore ways in which the two nations can mutually benefit from a deeper understanding and increased activity.
While Ukraine is expected to provide food grains to Bangladesh, it would do well for us to identify ways in which we too can be of assistance to Ukraine and develop these channels as soon as possible.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's call for resolving all disputes peacefully and cease war should be the mantra that each and every nation follows; time and time again, we have been reminded of the futility of war, and it is clear to see that the entirety of the global population suffers when any major war breaks out.
However, at this juncture, Bangladesh must do what is within its own jurisdiction and control. To that end, we hope to see Bangladesh's ties with Ukraine grow stronger, much like every other nation. Bangladesh has always wanted to be a friend to all nations, and long may that approach continue.
