In need of energy

Renewable energy should be given precedence over all other options

Update : 13 Apr 2023, 08:27 AM

That a record 14,800 megawatts of electricity was produced in the country on Tuesday -- the highest daily power generation in Bangladesh's history -- is certainly positive news. More so in light of the global fuel and energy crisis that was such an imminent threat not too long ago and the frequent load-shedding we've historically faced in the country, that we have managed to not only keep our power generation consistent but have also reached a new peak is commendable.

With a current capacity of 26,000MW, the authorities' attempts to maintain regular power supply during the summer have so far proven to be a success -- which has been a matter of contention in the past.

However, this is not the end of our energy woes by any means.

Taking into account the numerous external factors that determine our power supply capacity, traditional energy sources can no longer be our only choice. As we as a publication have editorialized in the past, it is imperative that we explore further avenues of power generation immediately.

The conventional energy sources are not only harder to access now, but also have been proven to be a threat to the environment. To that end, renewable energy should be given precedence over all other options. Green energy is the sustainable way forward, and can be a more reliable choice for the overall well-being of our people and the environment.

We have demonstrated impressive resilience in the face of past power crises, and we must continue to make this a priority moving forward, so that power generation is not a concern for Bangladesh in the future.
