No alternative to energy efficiency

Take measures to ensure a lack of energy does not appear as a roadblock

Update : 26 Dec 2022, 12:24 AM

With the ongoing global energy crisis, it is plain to see that, if Bangladesh is to be successful in sustaining its economic development, it must proactively take measures to ensure a lack of energy does not appear as a future roadblock.

Moreover, the climate crisis continues to be the planet's single biggest existential crisis, and when addressing any energy needs, it would behoove every nation to have one eye on the overall impact on the global climate.

With all of that in mind, Economic Relations Division (ERD) inking three deals with KfW Development Bank (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau) for the development of the country's energy efficiency and renewable energy -- two loan agreements totalling €162 million for the projects titled "Energy Efficiency in the Industry" and the "Renewable Energy Program II" and a grant agreement of €19.5 million to implement the "Renewable Energy Program III -- are the sort of deals we expect to see more and more of from Bangladesh in the coming years and decades.

Bangladesh's economic ambitions are to be a developed nation and, as such, it is imperative that we -- sooner rather than later -- are able to transition away from our archaic, inefficient ways, particularly in our industries that are energy-intensive. From embracing automation to substituting existing machinery and equipment with more energy-efficient substitutes, there is much that Bangladesh can do.

Furthermore, we have only begun to scratch the surface of utilizing renewable energy and over the next two decades, this is an area that we must make significant strides in.

Ultimately, how we address efficiency and energy requirements could determine whether we reach our full potential and become a developed, smart nation, or we fall short and are unable to avoid the middle income trap that so many nations before us have fallen into.
