A way out of our energy woes

Renewable energy is the solution

Update : 20 Jul 2022, 08:40 PM

The world has collectively been working towards adapting greener living solutions. While other nations have advanced significantly in their pursuit of renewable energy generation, Bangladesh seems to be lagging behind in the field.

Although we have seen promising steps being taken towards adapting green energy, we are yet to fully tap into our potential. It is vital, especially under current circumstances, that we focus more of our attention and resources towards renewable energy generation.

As ordered by the state minister for power, energy, and mineral resources, the country is currently undergoing scheduled power outages daily in order to reduce our energy use. While this is a fitting move -- considering we are at risk of a depleting supply of energy -- we must also be proactive in finding a more sustainable approach to a possible energy crisis.

This cannot be reiterated enough: Renewable energy is the solution, and we must take all necessary steps to get there.

According to recent figures, renewable energy makes up about 3% of the national energy generation. There has been a steady, albeit slow, progress made towards green energy solutions in the country. However, with fossil fuel use being phased out globally, our reliance on it must also be reduced as early as possible to avoid energy crises in the future.

Green energy sources are not only the sustainable way forward, but will also significantly improve our quality of life. Our current energy sources are known to be extremely harmful for us and the environment, and while there has been a global acknowledgement of this very fact, Bangladesh needs to act faster to counter the damage that continues to be done.

It is encouraging that a large number of renewable energy projects have been set up in Bangladesh over the last many years, but they need to be implemented with much more urgency than we've demonstrated so far.

We cannot wait for disaster to strike.
