No one can deny just how effectively Bangladesh has handled the Covid-19 virus, keeping it at bay when even some of the most well-developed nations in the world succumbed to its destructive capabilities.
Since the virus broke out more than two years ago, vigorous attempts by the government to contain its spread in our country resulted in the total number of infections being capped around 2 million. So far anyway.
The administration needs to be applauded for its comprehensive and well planned vaccination drives, the most recent of which saw upwards of 8 million people receiving second shots and booster doses in three days. And it is good to know that such campaigns will be conducted in the future to motivate people into getting their shots, particularly booster doses.
This momentum needs to keep going.
But with the administration’s goals for vaccination dictating that first and second doses would no longer be available after November of this year, we urge the public to go out and get their first and second doses if they haven’t done so already, as the priority from then onwards would strictly be on administering periodic booster doses in order to keep the virus at bay.
We cannot stress this with any more gravity: If you have never received a single shot of the Covid-19 vaccine, please do so immediately.
With recent spikes in cases we are once again reminded that Covid-19 as a threat is still clear and present, and only through cooperation and collective action can we finally leave this virus in the rear-view mirror once and for all.
