It is a matter of great pride for Bangladesh that the United Nations has chosen to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers by honouring eight peacekeepers from Bangladesh who lost their lives in the line of duty.
They will be awarded the Dag Hammarskjold Medal, given to military personnel, police, or civilians who were killed while bravely serving in a UN peacekeeping operation, in addition to 121 others, and we as a nation are grateful for their services towards leaving the world a much better place.
From Bangladesh, the fallen peacekeepers are: Abdul Md Halim, Lance Corporal Md Abdulla Al Mamun, Sgt Mohammad Ibrahim, Sgt Md Mobarak Hussain, Lt Col Md Saiful Islam, Md Saiful Imam Bhuiyan, Sgt Md Ziaur Rahman, and Washerman Nurul Amin -- we salute you and your services to the peacekeeping cause.
Bangladesh’s contribution to the peacekeeping efforts of the UN has consistently been one of the largest, usually at top stop, deploying more than 6,600 military and police personnel all across the world, in some of its most dangerous places.
The service given by our peacekeepers is proof that, in this increasingly globalized world, all nations are part of the same Earth, and we must continue to help the most vulnerable nations and people in order to ensure that the world we live in becomes a better place.
In accordance with the theme for this year, “The road to a lasting peace: Leveraging the power of youth for peace and security,” we hope that their sacrifices and contributions act as inspiration for the generation of tomorrow to work towards a future of sustainable growth, prosperity, and peace, at home as well as abroad.
