Israel’s attacks on UNIFIL and the lacklustre international response

Israel did not, as usual, claim the bombing was a mistake

Update : 13 Oct 2024, 08:00 AM

UNIFIL forces on the Lebanese-Israeli border, deployed by a decision of the Security Council, have been subjected to several deliberate attacks by Israeli forces, which have so far resulted in two serious injuries, one of which is critical.

Israel did not, as usual, claim the bombing was a mistake. Instead, it demanded that UNIFIL forces leave the area or change their positions to align with Israeli military plans.

A UNIFIL spokesman announced the rejection of Israel's request, emphasizing that only the Security Council, which deployed the forces, has the authority to alter their positions.

The countries participating in the forces, especially the European ones, have shown discontent with the Israeli aggression against UNIFIL. However, their response has been limited to asking the Israeli government not to repeat the attacks, and this is practically classified under the category of a modest response.

As for President Biden, whose country voted for the establishment and positioning of UNIFIL forces, he issued a weak statement, merely announcing that he had asked Israel to avoid targeting these forces. This request resembled his previous appeals to Israel to avoid killing Palestinian and Lebanese civilians—requests that Israel responded to by increasing massacres, the most recent being those in Jabaliya and Beirut.

President Biden has deservedly been described as the weakest U.S. president in recent history, but the issue extends beyond him personally. America has now earned a fitting title: the giant trailer being pulled by Israel's small bike.
