Death anniversary of Jibanananda Das observed in his native city

The 60th death anniversary of Jibanananda Das, widely dubbed as the poet of Rupasheei Bangla has been observed in Barisal, his native city, on Wednesday.

To mark the occasion, fans and readers from mainly the cultural arena put floral wreaths at the mural of the poet at Kabi Jibanananda Memorial Hall built in the compound of his parental home at Kabi Jibanananda Das Sarak in the town.

Participants of the programme demanded to set up Poet Jibanananda International Research Center at his birth place.

The speakers at the occasion demanded the recovery of the land for opening a research center on the life and achievements of the poet, as most of the land now were under the possessions of government, non-government authorities and owners,

Poet Jibanananda and his family members lived at this place where he engaged in creative writings.

Tapankar Chakraborty, president of Kabita Parishad Barisal branch, presided over the programme.

The occasion was marked with discussions on life and achievements of the poet and recitation of poems.

Among others Aroop Talukdar, Dr Muhsin Uddin, Dr Mostak Al Mehedi, Asma Chowdhury, Kazi Selina, Partha Sarathi Biswas, Sushanta Ghosh, Palash Bala, Suvash Chandra Das and members of Jatiya Kabita Parishad Barisal unit, attended the programme.

A discussion meeting and cultural function organised by Shilpakala academy district unit in collaboration with district administration held at Ashwini Kumar Hall of the city on Wednesday evening.

Shohidul Alam, deputy commissioner and president district Shilpakala Academy presided over the programme. Among others by Md Gaus, divisional commissioner, Humayun Kabir, deputy inspector general of police, Hasanur Rashid Maksud and district cultural officer, Prof Debashis Haldar, addressed the program.

Participants of the programmes also demanded implementation of the Dhanshiri River eco park project and excavation of Dhanshiri River, establishing museum, memorials and sculptures of the poet in places connected with his life, works, memories, more study and research on his life and achievements.

Jibanananda was hit by a trum while crossing a street near Calcutta's Deshapriya Park while returning home after his routine evening walk on October 14, 1954.

He was taken to Shambhunath Pundit Hospital and died there on October 22, 1954 after eight days of struggling with death.
