Update : 28 Dec 2022, 06:35 PM

2022 was an eventful year for the smartphone market, both locally and globally.

Due to the unstable dollar market, the prices of smartphones in Bangladesh witnessed several hikes in the last few months. But against all odds, the smartphone manufacturers still managed to keep manufacturing phones.

In the Android world, we got introduced to lots of smartphones powered by Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 and 8+ Gen 1 with 8 Gen 2 on its way already. We actually have quite a few smartphones that already shipped with Snapdragon's 8 Gen 2 while some like Samsung's S23 Ultra are still in the pipeline.

Meanwhile, Apple mostly continued with its way through the year 2022 with its A15 Bionic chipset until September, when they introduced A16 Bionic with iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max.

Google also introduced the Tensor G2 chipset which came with its Pixel 7 lineup.

As usual, since it is almost the end of another year, it is time for us to give our verdicts on the top smartphones of the year.

Do keep in mind that the smartphones mentioned in this list are only the ones you will be able to get your hands on in Bangladesh, both via official and unofficial channels.

Most innovative

Last year, it was Samsung who captured our attention with the most innovative smartphone with its Galaxy Z Flip 3. It is no different this year. Samsung launched its Z Flip 4 and made it even better than last year.

The phone is now more beefed up, with Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 on the inside while the battery capacity also witnessed an increase to 3700 mAh. The offer price is currently Tk146,999 in Excel eStore.

However, other manufacturers like Xiaomi are catching up with Samsung quite fast. I think it is safe to say that we will see loads and loads of innovative and foldable smartphones in the next few years.

As honourable mentions, we have to name Xiaomi's Mix Fold 2 and Samsung's Z Fold 4. Both of them are good smartphones, but we figured that they are just not for regular consumers due to their prices and massive size.

Value for money with premium specs

The best value for money, when it comes to premium specs is the Google's Pixel 7 Pro.

There are many great things about the Pixel 7 Pro, including its outstanding triple camera, elegant design and a big 6.7-inch screen.

Even though it isn't much different from the Pixel 6 Pro, those upgrading from a phone that is over two years old will notice a significant difference. Google has enhanced the zoom capabilities on the Pixel 7 Pro, giving it a 30x digital zoom for taking closer shots as opposed to the 6 Pro's 20x range.

Google's Tensor G2 chip will enable some new features for the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, including the ability to sharpen old photos.

Although Pixel 7 Pro offers an amazing camera and performance, the phone comes at exactly Tk100,000 price, which is much lower than the price of some other flagship phones including the Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra or Apple's iPhone 14 Pro.

However, you will have to buy an unofficial phone if you are planning to purchase a Pixel device in Bangladesh.

Best camera

Many of you may have expected Apple's latest and greatest iPhone 14 Pro to take this spot. However, that's not what we chose this year.

We decided to name Samsung's Galaxy S22 Ultra as the best camera phone for the year 2022 purely for its versatility.

Yes, the latest iPhone can capture videos that are sometimes hard to differentiate from a professional video camera. Yes, Pixel 7 Pro can capture amazing daytime shots. However, Samsung S22 Ultra does them both fluently.

Not only does the Samsung S22 Ultra have 8K video recording capabilities, but it also has massive zooming capability which almost seems surreal at some points. And the phone provided us with better performance in each scenario, let it be daylight, low light or pitch black.

Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra is currently being sold at Excel eStore at Tk139,999, which is an offer price of course.

There are some honourable mentions though. Apart from iPhone 14 Pro and Pixel 7 Pro, we have Vivo X80 that can capture amazing low light and nighttime shots while Xiaomi's 12S Ultra stands out to be the best when it comes to the number of features and software optimizations it offers in its native camera app.

Best entry-level smartphone

As we have mentioned earlier, the smartphone market cooled due to increased dollar prices.

However, it did not stop Realme from releasing its C33 smartphone.

Priced at Tk12,999, Realme C33, with an AnTuTu benchmark score of 208,004, is well ahead of its current competitors. The only drawback is that it uses a micro USB port instead of Type-C for charging and data transfer.

Mid-range champion

With a price tag of Tk39,999, the Xiaomi's 11i Hypercharge wins this segment.

The phone comes with a MediaTek Dimensity 920 chipset, a nice design, a 120Hz refresh rate FHD+ AMOLED panel and a 120 Watts supercharge capability that can fully charge the phone within 15 minutes.

In short, this phone offers everything you can expect from a mid-range smartphone.

However, the mid-range smartphone market was highly saturated in 2022. We have smartphones like Realme GT Neo 2 at Tk42,990 that come with the Snapdragon 870 chipset. There is also Pixel 6A available at Tk36,000 as well as Realme 9 Pro Plus and Realme GT Master Edition from last year.

Smartphone of the year

In terms of overall smartphone performance, the latest iPhone 14 Pro took the spot from Samsung.

Last year, it was the iPhone 13 Pro that had the best camera performance. This year, Samsung took their spot.
