Popular belief suggests that if the kitchen is neat, the rest of the house maintenance becomes a piece of cake. So what really makes a clean kitchen?

With so many home appliances, cooking tools, jars of spices, and cutlery scattered all over the place, it may seem a little overwhelming. But fear not, a few crucial tips will clean up all that clutter in no time.

First things first, let's get organised. Label all the jars with spices' names on them. You don't want to mistake salt for sugar in your tea. Make sure all the caps are always carefully secured.

Shelf room

Shelves and cabinets can be a life saver if your kitchen is small. We recommend closed shelves for storing jars of spices and open ones for vegetables (you're not going to refrigerate certain vegetables such as onions, potatoes, etc, so get vented baskets for them and stack these baskets in open shelves). Pro tip: Place paper towels at the bottom of your refrigerator's drawers. They will stop the veggies from rotting by absorbing all the excess moisture.

Repel bugs

The food central of your dig will have bugs and pests lurking around the corners. Your best bet is to do a monthly clean-up using pest control and leave a pesticide overnight. Opt for a powder formula and steer clear of sprays. Make sure the powder is carefully placed away from the spice jars and you thoroughly clean it up the next morning. Pro tip: Slip a bay leaf or whole clove in jars of sugar, flour or even rice to keep ants and bugs at bay.

Spilt water

You'll be constantly running your tap to clean those dishes, wash vegetables, and cutlery. And this means you'll always have water splattered all over the countertops and the floor of your kitchen and what that basically translates to is dirty kitchen floor. Keep a few damp towels stacked in a corner to wipe off any spilt water after you're done washing. Keep the sink dry as well.

Ventilation

If you're blessed with a vent hood on top of your stove, you don't have to worry much about ventilation, a mere exhaust fan will do. If not, then keep all the windows open and the kitchen airy.
