Retiring the kamla

Update : 05 Jul 2015, 11:42 AM

Imagine wearing blue loafers, green pants and a magenta shirt. No, a pink one paired with tacky sunglasses to your university. Be tagged as the new kamla on the block while you're at it. Would you? Before you start thinking, our folks at T-junction have gone berserk, and no we are not advocating the “kamla” outfits. We'll just talk about how you can avoid looking like one when trying something new. Keep these few things in mind, and the kamla look-book is to be slammed closed for good.

How do you define a kamla outfit? Simple, anything that makes you look unsophisticated, tacky and well, cheap. Following trends from the last decade and experimenting without thinking doesn't help the cause either.

Back from the dead

Trends change but we Dhakaites tend to hold on to them for our dear lives. Say, for instance, comfy cargo pants. We at T-Junction always emphasise on your comfort but a baggy and hideous looking bottom half is too high a price. Although the recent rise in popularity of chinos did see a fall for cargos, you'd still find a pair here and there. And cargo pants are just one among the many outdated fashion trends which still prevail here.

Don't wish to get out of your comfort-zone? Fine, find alternatives which provide a similar level of ease but looks better on you. After all, your attire gives an impression of your personality.

Know yo' strengths homie!

People vary from one another, so do their features. Which makes perfect sense; if someone else looks good in something doesn't mean you would do too. For instance, orange highlights may look good on Katy Perry's milky complexion but on a brown skin, we just look like a funky broom! So guys, (ahem, girls too) lets skip the highlights on this chand raat.

Fashion is something very personal, which depends on your features. Finding your own style is key, knowing which, you can never go wrong. One may take inspiration and try to incorporate that but never copy, unless the other person is your doppelganger.

Go crazy! Not.

We all love experimenting with colours and pattern and why not? However, without keeping in mind a few fashion basics, it can go horribly wrong. If you're opting for brighter colours for one half, make sure you contrast it with the other. Meaning, if you're wearing red chinos with a patterned red tee, you would end up looking like a circus ringmaster. On the other hand, a contrasting white tee would perfectly compliment the red chino. Yes, it is that simple.

No room for old school

Popping up collars (unless the sun is burning your neck), letting the baggy pants drop (not the beat) and t-shirts two sizes bigger doesn't make anyone old school.

The inside is as vital as the outside

No matter how good you look on the outside, your body-odour (a despicable kamla trait) cannot be hidden with cologne for too long. Personal hygiene is essential. Not showering in Dhaka is unforgivable. While at it, let's not forget the importance of clean undergarments.

Keep an eye

With internet on our side, we have no excuse to not know fashion trends around the world. You are literally just a click away from looking better. Plus, we live in a country with a booming RMG sector that manufactures clothing for industry heavy-weights, with markets like Doja which has quality clothing among ordinary ones. Surely, we can dress better!

All in all, not being a kamla is not that hard. Taking a bit of time to think about your outfit before donning would ensure lesser chances of fashion blunders, and increases the chances of you looking like a million dollars. Dress your profession and you'll be more than satisfied.
