Maulana Nuruddin Fatehpuri passes away

He was 75 years old at the time of his death

Maulana Muhammad Nuruddin Fatehpuri, an expert in Arabic, Persian and Urdu languages and one of the editors of Committee for Documentation on Architectural Sites in Dhaka, died of old age at his home in Potan village in Kaliganj upazila of Gazipur on Tuesday. He was 75 years old. 

He leaves behind a wife, two sons, two daughters and countless well-wishers.

In the 1980s, author, researcher and translator Maulana Fatehpuri began gathering texts of numerous unpublished inscriptions.

He was the first to begin the practice of history in Bangladesh by collecting the text of inscriptions.

Books of Maulana Fatehpuri, written in a variety of languages, are imaginative and profound.

Maulana Fatehpuri was born in 1948 in the village of Potan (Fatehpur) under Muktarpur union.

In addition to studying at Bara Katra Madrasa, Maulana Fatehpuri also worked as a long-term instructor there.

He grew interested in the background and legacy of Mughal architecture after visiting Bara Katra.

He left this Qaumi-style, traditional madrasa at the beginning of the 1990s as a result of politics.

At Khaje Dewan Lane Mahila Madrasa, he later taught.

In addition to teaching, he served from the 1960s to 2019 as a khatib at Lalbagh's Bara Bhat Mosque, which has a remaining of Mughal architecture.

Since having a stroke in 2019, he had been residing at his village house.

Both Bhat Masjid Mahalla in Lalbagh in Old Dhaka (after zuhr prayer) and Maulana Fatehpuri's home in Potan village (10am) will host funeral prayers on Wedneday.

Then, he will be laid to rest at his family graveyard.

Professor AAMS Arefin Siddique, former vice chancellor of Dhaka University, expressed sadness at the passing of Maulana Muhammad Nuruddin Fatehpuri.
