Educational institutes to reopen on Feb 22

Govt decides to keep pry schools closed for another two weeks

Update : 17 Feb 2022, 09:46 PM

In-person classes at school and colleges for fully vaccinated students across the country will restart from February 22, Education Minister Dipu Moni has said.

She said that the government, however, has decided to keep primary schools closed for another two weeks in the hope that infections will further drop and in the meantime, those under 12 will be brought under vaccination.

Dipu Moni was speaking at a press briefing at the Secretariat on Thursday.

Only fully vaccinated students, who have received two jabs, will be able to attend in-person classes while others will have to take classes online, she said.

The decision to reopen universities has been left to the authorities of the institutions, added Dipu Moni.

The announcement came following the directive of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and the recommendation of the National Technical Advisory Committee on Covid-19 on Wednesday.

However, the minister warned that classes should be conducted under strict compliance with Covid-19 School Health and Safety Protocols. There will be no compromise in this regard.

She said the number of classes in all grades will  be increased so that exams are held as per schedule on a short syllabus.

Of the 12.8 million students at the secondary level, 1.27 million have received the first dose vaccine and around 3.5 million have received the second dose, the minister said.

Students who received the first covid shot by February 21 will be brought under the second dose soon, she added

University admission tests will also be taken in short syllabus

The Education Ministry will hold a meeting with the VCs of all the universities and the University Grants Commission (UGC) and decide on the size of the syllabus for university admission tests, Dipu Moni said.

Advice will also be given on beginning the admission process in coordination with all the universities, including the National University, the minister added.

Dipu Moni said that the ministry has already held discussions in this regard with Dhaka University, Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) and the cluster examination committee.

On January 21, the government announced the closure of all schools and colleges of the country until February 6 amid a renewed surge in Covid-19 cases.

The shutdown was later extended until February 20.

After a 17-month Covid-induced closure, students returned to their classrooms on September 12 last year.

The government had closed educational institutions on March 17, 2020, after the country reported its first Covid-19 cases on March 8. The closure was extended several times.
