Language movement veteran and national professor Sufia Ahmed who died of cardiac arrest on Thursday night, was laid to rest in Banani graveyard in the capital yesterday.
Sufia Ahmed was buried at 10:30am yesterday in the grave of her husband and former advisor to the caretaker government and late law legend Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed, said Md Asaduzzaman, a senior member of Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed and Associates.
Sufia was admitted to the United Hospital in Dhaka on March 15 for pneumonia, but she died of cardiac arrest at around 8:50pm on Thursday, according to her family sources.
Sufia was a professor at the department of Islamic history and culture at Dhaka University.
She was the daughter of Justice Muhammad Ibrahim, eighth vice chancellor of Dhaka University.
Born on November 20, 1932 in Faridpur, Sufia was a student of Islamic history and culture at Dhaka University. She was actively involved in the Language Movement in 1952.
She was one of the female forerunners to break Section 144 and to deny the curfew on Dhaka University campus on February 21, 1952.
Sufia joined the Islamic history and culture department of the university as a teacher in the 1960s.
She was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2002 and Sufia Kamal Award in 2015.
She also served as the president of Bangladesh Itihas Parishad.
