Defender Topu Barman struck twice as Bangladesh defeated hosts San Marino 2-1 in a historic FIFA international friendly at the San Marino Stadium in Serravalle on Friday.
The match marked the first-ever meeting between the two nations and Bangladesh’s maiden international fixture against a European opponent on European soil.
It was also the debut match in charge for newly appointed head coach Thomas Dooley.
Captain Jamal Bhuiyan returned to the starting lineup after spending much of his time on the bench under former coach Javier Cabrera. Winger Rafiqul Islam also started, while Shamit Shome, Bishwanath Ghosh and goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico were among the substitutes.
Bangladesh took the lead in the 19th minute when Topu met a pinpoint cross from Sheikh Morsalin with a glancing header, scoring the country's first-ever goal in Europe.
The hosts restored parity in the 31st minute as Nicolas Giacopetti finished off a cross from Filippo Berardi.
With the match seemingly heading for a draw, Topu rose highest in the 86th minute to head home the winner. The goal came after substitute Bishwanath Ghosh volleyed Hamza Choudhury’s free-kick back into the danger area.
The centre-back celebrated ecstatically by removing his jersey after completing his match-winning brace.
The victory handed Bangladesh a memorable result in their first international match on European soil.
The Bangladesh team is scheduled to depart San Marino for home on Saturday.
