Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birthday to be celebrated in Dhaka

Master film-maker Ingmar Bergman’s 100th birth anniversary, which was celebrated on July 14, will be marked in Dhaka by Moviyana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy through a workshop named “Bergman Path.”

The workshop will be held at Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy from 3-8pm tomorrow and Saturday. 

The workshop will be conducted by renowned film critic and writer, Mahmudul Hossain, and coordinated by film-maker and writer, Belayet Hossain Mamun. The last day to register for the workshop is today. 

The news was announced at a recent press statement issued by Moviyana Film Society.

Belayet Hossain Mamun, the coordinator of the workshop said in the statement: “It is possible to do year-long programs on the films of Bergman. Maybe even that will not be enough. In Bangladesh we feel the necessity to study and teach the works of Ingmar Bergman. So, Moviyana Film Society and Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy have joined hands to arrange a workshop on the master filmmaker, titled ‘Bergman Path,’ marking his 100th birth anniversary.” 

Ernst Ingmar Bergman, born on July 14, 1918, who died on July 30, 2007, was a Swedish director, writer, and producer who worked in film, television, theatre, and radio. He is considered to be among the most accomplished and influential filmmakers of all time. Bergman's renowned works include “Smiles of a Summer Night” (1955), “The Seventh Seal” (1957), “Wild Strawberries” (1957), “The Silence” (1963), “Persona” (1966), “Cries and Whispers” (1972), “Scenes from a Marriage” (1973), and “Fanny and Alexander” (1982). In his lifetime, Bergman directed over sixty films and documentaries for cinematic release and for television, most of which he also wrote. He directed over 170 plays.
