Piping hot fish deep-fried in crispy batter and golden fries served with a slice of lemon and tartare sauce is nothing but pure joy in the form of comfort food. Although the idea of fish and chips originated in England and is often considered the national dish of Britain, this combo has fans worldwide. This dish does not call for anything fancy at all, just a perfect pairing of piping hot, succulent fish, and crisp chips.

Traditionally, for the batter fried fish, cod and haddock are used in England and other countries. Other white fishes like basa and Dori are used in Asian countries for cheaper versions.

The batter is made of all-purpose flour and simple seasonings of salt and black pepper, which are mixed with sparkling water for extra bubbles in the batter that make it so crispy. And the British chips served with the fish are usually thicker than American-style French fries. Apart from being utterly delicious, A serving of fish and chips contains essential nutrients such as dietary fibre, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin C, B6, and B12, as well as trace amounts of iron, zinc, and calcium.

It's unclear where fish and chips first appeared. Chips became popular in Lancashire and Yorkshire, but fried fish was initially brought to and sold by East End Jews. When Western Sephardic Jews arrived in England in the seventeenth century, they would have made fried fish that resembled the flour-crusted dish "Pescado frito." Fish that has been battered is dipped in a batter made of flour and liquid—mostly water, but occasionally beer—after being coated with flour. Corn flour may be included in some more recent iterations of the recipe, and soda water may occasionally be substituted for beer. In 1860, Joseph Malin established the first fish and chip business in London, offering "fish fried in the Jewish fashion."

Serving fried cuisine throughout Europe, the contemporary fish and chip establishment got its start in the United Kingdom. The amenities of the first fish and chip stores were quite simple. Over time, the fish-and-chip store transformed into a conventional setup wherein the food was presented to customers wrapped in newspaper. George Orwell in his book The Road to Wigan Pier (1937), wrote about fish and chips as the home comfort food of the working classes.
