The types of pizza around the world

Pizza has been endlessly experimented with in different countries, resulting in a deliciously diverse array of options for everyone to enjoy

Whether it's a hangout with friends or a late-night movie at home, pizza is always a favorite. Originating in Naples, Italy, in the 18th century, pizza has gained fans worldwide. As its popularity grew, so did the variety of pizzas, with different toppings being created globally.

In addition to the classic Neapolitan-style pizza, thin crust topped with tomatoes, mozzarella cheese, and basil—there are countless other types that people love. Today, you can find everything from traditional margherita pizzas to unique fusion creations inspired by local flavours, like beef kala bhuna pizza or chicken keema dopeyaja pizza from Domino’s.

Sicilian Style Pizza

Originating in  Sicily, Italy, Sicilian pizza is typically rectangular. With a crispy exterior and a lighter interior, its crust is typically denser and more focaccia-like. It is topped with onions, anchovies, tomatoes, and herbs.

New York-style pizza

New York has hundreds of pizzerias serving the city’s iconic New York-style pizza. It is said that the first pizzeria in the United States was Lombardi's, established by Gennaro Lombardi in New York City's Little Italy in 1905 and New York-style pizza was invented there. New York–style pizza is traditionally hand-tossed. This pizza is distinguished by its large and wide slices with a thin crust that is foldable yet crispy. Traditionally, tomato sauce and mozzarella cheese are layered on top, followed by any additional toppings.

Chicago style deep dish pizza 

When we think about a variation of pizza, the first thing that pops into mind is the Chicago-style deep dish pizza. There are many places to offer a good deep-dish pizza in Dhaka. A Chicago-style pizza is distinguished by its elevated pie crust, which offers ample space for generous amounts of cheese, a thick tomato sauce, and multiple layers of toppings. The classic pizza structure is also altered by Chicago-style deep-dish pizza, which places its sauce on top of the cheese.

Turkish thin-crusted pizza: Lahmacun

Lahmacun, which translates loosely to “meat and dough”, is a baked flatbread that has a topping of minced meat and herbs. This is more like a thin-crusted Middle Eastern pizza commonly known as Turkish pizza. Sometimes people enjoy vegetables, including pickles, tomatoes, peppers, onions, lettuce, parsley, and roasted eggplant wrapped inside Lahmacun.

Okonomiyaki: The Japanese pizza 

When compared to the original Italian pizza, okonomiyaki, a Japanese version of pizza, is almost unrecognisable. Though the exact ingredients vary by location, the recipe usually calls for cabbage, pork, noodles, and squid.

It is fried in batter, layered, or mixed, and topped with an egg and okonomiyaki sauce, aonori (dried seaweed flakes), katsuobushi (bonito flakes), Japanese mayonnaise, and pickled ginger.
