Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has pledged to improve the handloom sector and develop the living standards of its weavers across the country, said Education Minister Dr Dipu Moni.
She said this while speaking as the chief guest at the screening of Hernet's “Bongo Konnar Tant Prem" at Le Meridien Hotel in the city on Monday.
Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor (DNCC) Md Atiqul Islam, BGMEA President Faruque Hassan, State Minister for Information and Broadcasting Md Murad Hassan, social and human rights activist and MP, Aroma Dutta, Chairperson of Hernet TV Hasna Pradhan, Founder CEO of Hernet TV Alisha Pradhan and others attended the program.
“Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is promoting the handloom sector by wearing Jamdani saree in her daily life. In order to boost the handloom industry, the main goal of the present government is to develop the living standards of handloom weavers,” Dipu Moni also said.
She further said that the present government will make important rules in the development of handloom industry and weavers. If any plan or policy is formulated, it is possible to improve the living standard of weavers.
The government will formulate such a policy and it has worked for socio-economic development and financing of weavers, she added.
The weaving industry directly employs about 900,000 people and indirectly employs about 600,000 more.
It meets about 28% of the total textile demand of the country by producing 47.474 crore metres of cloth annually.
To meet the current capital demand of weavers, a loan of Tk9,687.35 crore has been disbursed to 46,645 marginal weavers so far (December, 2020) under the microcredit for weavers program.
“Sheikh Hasina Weaving Village is being constructed at Shibchar in Madaripur district and Jajira in Shariatpur adjacent to Padma Bridge. The present government will provide various raw materials including yarn dye to the weavers and an international standard exhibition and training center will be constructed in the area,” the education minister also said.
According to the latest weaving census, 40% of the country’s domestic textile demand is supplied by the weaving industry. The annual production of this industry is 68.70%.
The contribution of the weaving sector to the national economy in terms of value addition is Tk1,227 crore.
The total number of manual looms in existence is 183,512 while loom units in the country is 505,556. The number of currently operating looms is 311,851.
The government has taken a number of projects worth Tk1,848 crore for modernizing the handloom industry to meet the growing domestic demand and compete globally.
The number of handloom factories recognized by Bangladesh Handloom Board is now 279 and the country's 40% of the total fabric demand is supplied from those, according to the 2003 handloom census.
