According to the Regional Yield Trial conducted by the Tuber Crops Research Centre (TCRC), for late blight tolerant potato variety, the lowest mean of late blight infestation was recorded to be 1.99% in Sarpo Mira and the highest was 93.30% in Bari Alu-7 (Diamond).
Late Blight, a fungal infection, wreaks havoc on potato production each year, and sometimes farmers lose 25%-57% of their yield.
Farmers spend a huge amount of money on chemical fungicides to protect their produce from late blight infestation.
“This variety will save farmers thousands which they spent on fungicides.”
The particular variety has also shown very good yield potential, 40% higher than the most popular Diamand variety. The variety has specially strong foliage and requires only approximately 70% nitrate in comparison with the variety Cardinal.
The foliage remains green for a very long time, and between 100 and 115 days, Sarpo Mira gets ready to be harvested since it has a quite early tuber setting.
The Denmark variety of potato is strongly advised for organic growing in Europe, a constant high yield in dry and wet weather conditions.
The tuber characteristic of Sarpo Mira is also found to be good and quite acceptable to the farmers.
The tuber shape is long oval while the skin colour is light red. The depth of eyes is shallow and the flesh colour is Yellow.
A participatory variety selection trial was also conducted in the farmer’s field in the three districts – Bogra, Jamalpur and Rangpur.
Considering the size, shape and colour, and specially the higher yield, farmers of all locations showed keen interest in the Sarpo Mira variety. The variety will be available to farmers after it is formally approved by the authorities concerned.
