Four wholesalers have been fined for not being able to show the price list and purchase receipts for selling potatoes at high prices in Chittagong.

A mobile court conducted the operation at Reazuddin Bazar Alur Road in the city Thursday afternoon.

At that time, the four owners were fined Tk20,000 for not being able to show the price list and purchase receipt.

The four wholesalers — Kusumpura Traders, Mamun Traders, Shah Amanat Traders, and Yusuf Traders — were fined Tk5,000 each.

The operation was led by Omar Faruk, executive magistrate and assistant commissioner (land), Kattali Circle. At this time other traders were also warned.

During the campaign, potato traders explained that the price of potatoes had surged due to multiple intermediaries involved in transporting them from the land to the consumer.

At this time, Executive Magistrate Omar Faruq said: "This kind of operation will continue by the Chittagong district administration against dishonest traders. Legal action will be taken against anyone involved in the potato syndicate.”

Deputy Commissioner Abul Basar Mohammad Fakhruzzaman said: “Trading cannot be conducted without written papers. We always say that all traders will conduct business through purchase and sales receipts. But it is seen that instead of doing this, a class of traders are conducting business as a syndicate. This is never desirable, resulting in the penalty.”
