New cantonment adjacent to Padma bridge site

The government has decided to build a new cantonment on one side of the Padma bridge project and a minimum security installation on the side that will cost Tk1,774 crore over the next four years, according to official documents.

Bangladesh Army will construct a new cantonment and a state of the art surveillance station in and around the project in two phases — before and after construction — because of the crisis of funds.

Energy Cooperation deal signed at Saarc summit

The Saarc Framework Agreement on Energy Cooperation has been signed on Thursday afternoon aimed at trading electricity from one country to another and erecting trans-boundary power grids.

All the foreign ministers from the eight Saarc member countries signed the deal on behalf of their respective countries on the second and last day of the 18th Saarc Summit.

31 dope gang members held

Police detectives have detained 31 people in drives from different parts of Dhaka. General known as 'Oggyan Party', these gangs drug unsuspecting people and make away with their valuables.  

A DMP official told the Dhaka Tribune that a special team had conducted the drives through Wednesday night and made the arrests.

Dhaka University authorities have terminated three teachers as they did not join their offices after the end of their leaves.

The decision was taken at the university syndicate meeting held on Wednesday evening.

AL leader shot dead in Jessore

A local leader of the ruling Awami League has been shot dead by unidentified assailants at Guakhola village under Avaynagar upazila in Jessore.

The deceased is Molla Waliar Rahman, joint secretary of Avaynagar upazila unit of Awami League.

'Thai elections could be delayed'

The democratic elections in Thailand could be delayed for another 18 months, Thai Finance Minister Sommai Phasee has said.

Thai Prime Minister Prayuth Chan-ocha had said they could hold democratic elections in a year's time, at the end of 2015.
