A low-pressure system has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas, prompting the Bangladesh Meteorological Department to issue a warning for four seaports.

The department said the low-pressure system could cause gusty or squally winds over the seaports, the north Bay and adjoining coastal areas of Bangladesh.

In a marine warning signed by meteorologist Md Toriful Newaz Kabir on Sunday, the seaports of Chittagong, Cox’s Bazar, Mongla and Payra were advised to hoist local warning signal No 3.

Fishing boats and trawlers in the north Bay have been advised to proceed towards the coast with caution until further notice.

Meanwhile, in its forecast for inland river ports from 9:30am to 6pm on Sunday, the Meteorological Department said wind speeds of 45-60kmph could occur over Khulna, Barisal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar regions from the south or southeast.

Temporary rain or thundershowers, accompanied by gusty winds or squalls, are also likely in these areas.

River ports in the affected areas have been advised to hoist warning signal No 1.
