Heavy rainfall in central and border areas has pushed seven rivers above danger level, while water levels in several rivers may rise further over the next three days, the Flood Forecast and Warning Centre (FFWC) said on Monday.
The agency warned that flood-affected areas in the haor region could deteriorate further, with the possibility of new areas being inundated.
In its river situation and forecast bulletin, the FFWC said the Naljur River at Jagannathpur point in Sunamganj was flowing 40cm above danger level.
The Baulai River at Khaliajuri point in Netrokona was 8cm above danger level, while the Bhugai-Kangsha River at Jariajanjail point was 67cm above. The Someshwari River at Kalmakanda point was 50cm above, the Magra River at Netrokona point was 79cm above, and at Atpara point 27cm above.
The Kalni-Kushiyara River at Ajmeriganj point in Habiganj was 10cm above danger level, while the Sutang River at Sutang Railway Bridge point was 83cm above.
Among the main rivers in the haor basin of the northeastern region, water levels of the Surma-Kushiyara and Dhanu-Baulai rivers have risen, while the Bhugai-Kangsha rivers have shown a declining trend.
The bulletin said water levels in the Surma-Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj may rise over the next three days. On the second day, parts of the Kushiyara River may flow above danger level, which could worsen flooding in low-lying haor areas in the two districts.
Water levels of the Bhugai-Kangsha and Someshwari rivers in Netrokona are likely to remain stable over the next three days, though flood conditions may persist in low-lying areas of the basin.
The Dhanu-Baulai rivers in Netrokona and Kishoreganj are also expected to remain stable over the same period, with flood conditions likely to continue in adjacent low-lying areas.
In Moulvibazar and Habiganj, water levels of the Manu, Khowai and Juri rivers may remain stable for the next two days before rising on the third day. The Juri River may rise rapidly over the next 72 hours and reach warning level.
The Sutang River may rise over the next day before gradually falling over the following two days, although flood conditions in Habiganj are likely to persist as it continues to flow above danger level.
In its 24-hour forecast from 9am Monday, the FFWC said light to moderate rain or thundershowers, accompanied by temporary gusty or squally winds and lightning, may occur at some places in Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions, and at one or two places in Rangpur and Barishal divisions. Moderate to heavy rainfall is also likely in parts of Rajshahi, Mymensingh, Dhaka, Khulna, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions.
Hatiya recorded the country’s highest rainfall in the 24 hours to Monday morning at 124mm. Other notable rainfall amounts included Netrokona (71mm), Maijdee Court (48mm), Rangamati (46mm), Sylhet (43mm), Chattogram (41mm), Bhola (36mm), Srimangal and Tetulia (34mm each), and Nikli (32mm).
