Water level expected to increase in four divisions

At least three people, including a woman, have died while seeking shelter in Sherpur

Update : 05 Oct 2024, 09:22 PM

Water levels have risen above the danger mark in three districts of the Mymensingh division. The increased water levels have flooded the districts of Sherpur, Jamalpur, and Mymensingh.

Heavy rain upstream may cause further increases in water levels in the Sylhet and Chittagong divisions. Additionally, water levels are expected to rise in the coastal areas of the Khulna and Barisal divisions. However, the FFWC expects that water levels will remain below the danger mark.

The FFWC also forecasts a decrease in rainfall across these four divisions over the next two days.

Amid the worsening flood situation, at least three people, including a woman, have died while seeking shelter in Nalitabari upazila of Sherpur.

According to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC), heavy downpours both upstream in India and within Bangladesh have caused rivers to overflow.

In Sherpur, areas surrounding the Bhugai River have experienced 200mm of rainfall in just 12 hours.

Rainfall is expected to decrease in the division over the next 24 hours. The FFWC reported that the water level in these rivers is rising more slowly than it did on Saturday.

Sarder Udoy Raihan, executive engineer of the FFWC, stated, “There is a low likelihood of flooding in these four divisions.”

Cherrapunji, a town in Meghalaya, India, recorded 144mm of rainfall in the past two hours. This water will flow through the rivers of the Sylhet division, causing water levels there to rise. The surrounding rivers of Cherrapunji have already seen increased water levels, though they remain below the danger mark.

According to the Central Water Commission of India, the water level at the Dimpara station on the Bhugai River has decreased over the past 24 hours. However, water levels are rising at all stations in the Barak Valley basin, which feeds the rivers of the Sylhet and Chittagong divisions.

The Kuthibari, Bajitpur, Bangaon, and Tarinipur stations in the Indian state of West Bengal are now classified as “Extreme Floods.” These stations are on the Indian section of the Ichamati River, which enters Bangladesh through the Satkhira District.

At the Shakra station in Satkhira, the water level has risen by 15cm in the last 24 hours and is currently flowing just 0.60cm below the danger mark.

Incessant rains disrupt life in Dhaka; landslides likely in Chittagong

Incessant rain has led to waterlogging and traffic gridlocks in various parts of Dhaka, severely disrupting normal life for residents.

The rains, caused by an active monsoon, began around 1 pm on Friday and continued through Saturday afternoon, flooding streets in areas such as Green Road, Dhanmondi, Malibagh, Mouchak, New Market, and Mirpur.

Assistant Meteorologist Afroza Sultana of the Bangladesh Meteorological Department reported that 2mm of rain was recorded in Dhaka, while 66mm was recorded in Sylhet between 6 am and 9 am on Saturday.

Due to the heavy rainfall, landslides may occur in the hilly regions of the Chittagong division, according to the BMD.
