Low-lying riverbank areas in five northern districts may experience short-term flooding over the next three days as water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers are forecast to rise again, according to the Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre (FFWC).
The forecast, issued on Friday and signed by FFWC Assistant Engineer Mustafa Kamal Jihan, said riverbank areas in Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, Gaibandha and Kurigram are at risk of temporary flooding as water levels at several points may cross the danger mark.
According to the FFWC, water levels of the Teesta, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in Rangpur division fell over the past 24 hours but are expected to increase again during the next three days, potentially triggering short-term flooding in low-lying areas.
In the northeast, the Kushiyara River is flowing above the danger level at the Fenchuganj point in Sylhet and the Markuli point in Sunamganj. While the Kushiyara's water level rose over the past 24 hours, the Surma River receded. Both rivers, however, are likely to rise over the next three days.
Despite the increase, the FFWC said the flood situation in low-lying areas along the Surma and Kushiyara rivers in Sylhet and Sunamganj is expected to remain stable over the next 24 hours.
The water levels of the Brahmaputra-Jamuna and Ganges-Padma river systems also increased over the past 24 hours and are likely to continue rising over the next five days.
As a result, the Brahmaputra-Jamuna may approach the warning level at several locations in Kurigram, Gaibandha, Jamalpur and Bogra districts, raising the risk of inundation in adjacent low-lying riverbank areas.
Meanwhile, water levels of the Feni, Muhuri, Gomti and Selonia rivers declined over the past 24 hours. Although they may rise over the next day, their levels are expected to remain stable during the following two days.
The FFWC also noted that the well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha-West Bengal coast has weakened into a low-pressure area over north Odisha and adjoining Bihar and Gangetic West Bengal.
