Bangladesh has asked for stronger action on behalf of France and other European Union member states to ensure that Myanmar takes back the Rohingyas who have been provided shelter in Cox’s Bazar.
Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen made the request during a meeting with French Armed Forces Minister Florence Parly at his office on Monday.
In reply, the French minister assured of France’s active role in ensuring that Myanmar would follow the decisions of the International Court of Justice declared on January 23.
She also expressed her deep appreciation for Bangladesh due to its humanitarian position in accommodating more than one million Rohingyas, who fled to Bangladesh after being persecuted by their own government machinery in Myanmar.
In the meeting, Dr Momen expressed gratitude to France for its valuable support during the great Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, and the continued development and trade support till date.
He invited France to increase their investment in Bangladesh, highlighting the attractive investment packages offered by the country.
He suggested that investment by France in Bangladesh would create a win-win scenario for both the countries.
The foreign minister also referred to the excellent relations between Bangladesh and France in the area of adaptation and mitigation of climate change, and suggested that the two friendly countries should work more closely in this area for a sustainable future.
Parly agreed with Dr Momen, and assured of French cooperation in this regard.
Earlier, the French minister called on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office.
She also held meetings with the chief of air staff of Bangladesh and the principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division.
