Over 100 Rohingyas held across country in four months

The refugees were held in Comilla, Jessore, Dhaka, Sylhet, Kurigram and Dinajpur

According to reports by Dhaka Tribune and other news media, at least 109 Rohingya refugees have been detained from January this year from across the country, in locations far away from their camps in Cox’s Bazar.

Many were refugees who were trying to escape the camps. However, a significant portion were refugees  who entered the country from India. Some had arrived by air from the Middle East with fake Bangladeshi passports.

Police have at times arrested Bangladeshis involved with helping these Rohingyas escape the camps and obtain false passports.

The refugees were held in Comilla, Jessore, Dhaka, Sylhet, Kurigram and Dinajpur.

The number of arrestees was highest in January. At least 99 Rohingyas were detained. Many of the detainees were caught when they tried to obtain passports at regional offices.

On March 31, four refugees were detained from Dhaka airport with fake Bangladeshi passports while trying to travel to Indonesia.

On April 3, four Rohingya women were held in Kurigram from the regional passport office while trying to apply for passports. A Bangladeshi woman was also held with them.

On April 11, one refugee was arrested from the Dinajpur regional passport office, along with a middleman.
