Jamaat protests govt decision to increase fuel prices

Golam Parwar warned that higher fuel prices would lead to increased costs of transportation and essential commodities

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has expressed deep concern and lodged a strong protest against the recent increase in fuel prices, warning of its adverse impact on the country’s economy and ordinary citizens.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the party’s Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar criticized the government’s decision to raise fuel prices in multiple categories.

According to him, diesel prices have been increased by Tk 15 per litre, kerosene by Tk 18, octane by Tk 20, and petrol by Tk 19.
He said such price hikes would negatively affect the overall economy and bring additional hardship to the general public. “I express deep concern and protest against this anti-people decision of the government,” he stated.

Golam Parwar warned that higher fuel prices would lead to increased costs of transportation and essential commodities.

“The cost of food and other daily necessities will rise, disproportionately affecting middle- and lower-income groups,” he said, adding that while incomes remain unchanged, expenses would increase significantly, making it harder for people to maintain a normal standard of living.

He further noted that industrial production costs would rise, ultimately pushing up market prices and intensifying inflation. The agricultural sector would also face serious challenges, as increased costs for irrigation, transportation, and inputs would raise production expenses for farmers, posing a threat to food security.

“People are already struggling to cope with the rising cost of living. This fuel price hike will act as a ‘final blow’ to their hardships,” he added.

Parwar urged the government to immediately reconsider its decision and reduce fuel prices to a tolerable level.
