Gas price hike effective from today, HC stays second phase

Update : 01 Mar 2017, 12:44 AM
The first phase of the government’s decision to increase household and industrial gas price will come into effect from today while the High Court put a six-month embargo on Tuesday on the second phase hike scheduled for June. The order came from a High Court bench of justices Moyeenul Islam Chowdhury and JBM Hassan after primary hearing on a writ petition filed by the Consumer Association of Bangladesh a day ago. Last week, the regulator announced hiking gas price twice this year, in March and in June, ignoring the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) Act 2003 that prohibits it from doing so. On February 23, the BERC raised the gas price by a weighted average of 22.7%. For households, this hike is 55-60% and for transportation 33%. In a ruling, the High Court on Tuesday asked BERC Chairman Monowar Islam and Secretary Md Faizur Rahman to explain why the latest public notification on the hike should not be declared illegal. The High Court asked them to reply within four weeks. In the writ petition it was mentioned that the authorities can increase the gas price once a year. Gas price were last raised in September 2015.
