The apex court has dropped a corruption case against Awami League religious affairs secretary Sheikh Md Abdullah allowing a plea of the Anti Corruption Commission.
Though the anti graft body filed petition in 2011 seeking the Appellate Division nod to appeal against the High Court verdict that had annulled the case against the ruling party leader, the commission recently asked its counsel to plea the court for dropping the case.
The counsel MA Aziz Khan told the Dhaka Tribune: “Though the case have merit to proceed, I cannot but ask the Supreme Court to drop the case as the ACC instructed me to do so through a letter.”
Responding to the plea of ACC, a three-member top court bench headed by Chief Justice Md Muzammel Hossain rejected the ACC petition for leave to appeal.
The commission registered the case in 2008 alleging that Sheikh Abdullah concealed information of wealth worth Tk4.2 million. The case was pending with Dhaka’s Special Judges Court 5 but the High Court on Aug 18, 2010 scrapped the case following a petition of the Awami League leader.
