Hanif: Tarique Rahman talks nonsense

Update : 29 May 2014, 09:28 PM

Castigating BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman’s remark that Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was a failed politician while Ziaur Rahman a successful one, Awami League Joint General Secretary Mahbub-ul-Alam Hanif yesterday said Tarique was talking nonsense just to draw media attention.

“A son of Ziaur Rahman, Tarique was engaged in looting and is now leading a comfortable life in London, he said, adding that becoming mentally imbalanced, he is now talking rubbish.”

Hanif came up with his speech while talking to reporters at his business office in Karwanbazar in the city.

Hinting at Tarique Rahman’s recent controversial remarks, the Awami League leader said the press coverage encouraged him to talk so.

“Such rantings will stop if the news media cease to publish those,” he said.

Earlier at a rally in London held on Wednesday on the occasion of Ziaur Rahman’s 33rd death anniversary, Tarique said his father was the most successful politician while the architect of Bangladesh’s independence, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, was a failed politician.

About BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s speech that Awami League will not be able to come to power in the next 42 years, Hanif said it was an audacious statement made by the party chief.

“The countrymen will give a befitting reply to her statement in the coming days,” he said.

Hanif alleged that Khaleda Zia wanted to dissolve RAB because the Jamaat-e-Islami pressed her to do so.

“The elite force deals with Jamaat with an iron fist following the war crimes trial and that is why the party wants RAB’s extinction,” he said.

Brushing aside Khaleda Zia’s allegation that the government is not allowing the BNP to hold rallies, the Awami League leader said if that was the case how she [Khaleda Zia] attended the rally at Munshiganj.
