The contractor identified as Sultan Ahmed, 45, came under the gun fire around 11am in front of his office Mokhbul Plaza at Arambagh.

A listed contractor of the Water Development Board, Sultan was a resident of Kadomtola in Sabujbagh.

Police and witnesses said a gang of masked criminals launched the attack and fled the scene on their motorcycles.

He was a close aide to Jubo League leader Milky, who was also shot dead in Gulshan several months ago.

Sub-Inspector Aman Ullah of Motijheel police station said the bullet wounded contractor Sultan died after he was taken to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital.

The DMCH sources said Sultan received two bullets in his chest and abdomen.

Mohammad Shameem, an office assistant of contractor Sultan, said a gang of armed criminals sprayed bullets indiscriminately at Sultan while he was entering his office at 10/3 Arambagh.

Sultan’s driver Amir Hossain said the criminals swooped in on Sultan immediately after he got down from his car and was trying to enter his office.

“I dropped my boss and his body guard Kamrul in front of the building and went to park the car. Suddenly, I heard the sounds of several rounds of bullets. I saw two youths flee past me,” driver Amin Hossain said.

According to Sultan’s bodyguard Kamrul Hasan, Sultan asked him to buy a water bottle from a nearby shop.

“I was buying the water bottle when some gun shots were heard. I rushed to the building and saw two youths run away. Sultan’s body was lying on the staircase,” he said.

Police picked up Kamrul and Amin for interrogation.

Manager of the SASI Private Limited Ali Ahsan Shamim told the Dhaka Tribune they suspected sub-contractor Afzal Hossain.

He said Sultan had been running the Water Development Board projects in Tangail, Kurigram and Bhola.

“As far as I know he had an old feud with Afzal. On September 2011, Afzal abducted my boss and the abductors freed him after a few days and left him in Khamarbari area in Farmgate.”

Deputy Commissioner of Police Md Ashrafuzzaman in Motijheel Division said they were trying to find the reason behind the killing and trying to arrest the killers.

Sultan owned a business firm named SAIS Ltd located on 2nd floor of Mokhbul Plaza.
