The deal on sharing of Teesta waters will not take place until the fall of the ruling Awami League government, the BNP has claimed.
“The government ignored the interest of this nation and allowed India to use the Chittagong port and power corridor,” Mirza Fakhrul said on Tuesday.
BNP acting Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the claims during the party's “long march” programme towards the Teesta river.
He was speaking at rallies in Bogra's Matidali area and at Kadda intersection in Sirajganj during the course of the march.
“About 54 rivers are drying up because of the dams being placed at the border. Fishermen are going out of work, farmers are staring at barren lands.”
“Not even five percent of the population now support them. This is the time for a successful movement and compel the government for a fresh poll.”
Earlier at another rally in gazipur, Fakhrul claimed that it will not be possible for the Awami League government to bargain for Teesta waters.
The road march, that began on Tuesday, will rest at Rangpur city on Tuesday and head for Nilphamari on Wednesday morning.
