AL-BNP clash leaves 2 dead in Lakshmipur

At least two people have been killed and 20 others injured in a clash between the supporters of Awami League and BNP at Deupara village under Lakshmipur sadar upazila on Monday night.

The deceased were identified as Rabiul Hasan Shimul, son of Abdur Razzak and a class VIII student of Protapganj High School. Farhad Hossain, 24, grandson of BNP leader Tofael Ahmed.

Police and local sources said the supporters of Awami League-backed Nasir group attacked and looted the houses of BNP leaders Tofayel Ahmed and Chondroganj UP Member Ali Karim of Latifpur village.

Meanwhile, they also set fire to the residences of the BNP leaders that burned Farhad Hossain to death.

However, fire-fighters brought the blaze under control after a frantic effort of two hours.

The supporters of BNP-backed Zissan group attacked the residence of Chondroganj Union Chhatra League president Kazi Bablu when the news about the attack on BNP leaders spread in the area.

Bablu's nephew Rabiul died when the BNP supporters fired bullets while he was trying to escape from the spot.

On information, police rushed to the spot and fired several rounds of bullets to bring the situation under control.

Later, police recovered the bodies and sent those to the hospital.

Chondraganj police investigation centre In-Charge Abu Taher said: “Zissan and Nasir group locked into a clash around 9pm. A child named Rabiul died in the firing while Farhad was burned to death when the houses of BNP leaders were set on fire. Some 20 others were also injured in the clash.”
