860 AL, JaPa leaders to vie for 50 reserved seats

About 860 leaders of the ruling Awami League and its major ally Jatiya Party are to fight against the 50 reserved seats for women in the Parliament.

The ruling party distributed nomination forms from Wednesday until yesterday among the leaders aspiring to become lawmakers for the reserved seats.

The nomination seekers from the Awami League would be interviewed tomorrow at 3pm at the Gana Bhaban, the official residence of the Prime Minister.

Awami League Deputy Office Secretary Mrinal Kandi Das told the Dhaka Tribune yesterday that they had sold 821 forms to the aspirants, each at Tk25,000.

On the first day, Awami League sold 209 forms and on the second day it sold 386 forms, party sources said.

Aspirants deposited the forms to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s political office in capital’s Dhanmondi yesterday.

From the ruling party Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury, Faridunnahar Laily, Fajilatunnesa Indira, Khadiza Khatun, Shefali Akter, Asma Jerin Jhumu, Apu Ukil, Nazma Akter, Tohura Ali, Jahanara Begum, Shefali Momtaz, Jinnatunnesa Talukder, Chemon Ara have collected the nomination forms among others.

A total of 38 female aspirants from the Jatiya Party, including party chief HM Ershad’s sister Merina Rahman collected the nomination form from Jatiya Party’s Banani office to fight against six seats until yesterday, JaPa chief’s Press and Political Secretary Sunil Shuvo Ray said.

The nomination forms were sold at Tk5000 each.
